As followers of Christ and stewards of our children’s education, we are called not only to train them up in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6), but also to be faithful citizens who let our light shine before others—including those in leadership (Matthew 5:16).

One powerful way we can do that is by building relationships with our legislators. Scripture reminds us in 1 Timothy 2:1-2 to pray for “kings and all who are in authority,” that we may live peaceful and godly lives. Engaging with our leaders is an opportunity to live that out—graciously, consistently, and prayerfully.

To help you do this without feeling overwhelmed, we’ve created a simple Monthly Legislative Engagement Guide. Just one small action each month can make a big difference—and it sets a powerful example for our children about honoring authority and standing for truth.

🗓️ Monthly Legislative Engagement Ideas

SeptemberStart building the relationship & get equipped:

  • Reach out for an introductory meeting. Invite your legislator for coffee. Share who you are, and how your family is impacted by the policies they consider.

DecemberShare Christ’s love: Send your family’s Christmas card, including a verse that reflects the hope we have in Jesus. Let them see Christ in you.

FebruaryEncourage and uplift: Write a short note reminding them that your family is praying for the upcoming session. Words of encouragement go a long way (Proverbs 16:24).

MarchShow up in person: The legislative session begins March 9. Bring your children to the Capitol to hear Governor Landry share his vision. Visit your legislators and thank them face to face—modeling bold yet respectful civic engagement.

AprilBe ready to stand: Monitor key legislation and action alerts from Homeschool Louisiana. When action is needed, speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

MayBe part of the movement: Attend Homeschool Capitol Day with your family. Afterward, send a note of appreciation and encouragement to the leaders you met.

JuneClose with gratitude: As the session ends, mail a thank you card to your legislators. Express your appreciation for their service—and continue lifting them up in prayer.

This journey is not just political—it’s spiritual. As you engage, remember that your ultimate goal is to be a light for Christ and a faithful ambassador for the freedoms we hold dear (2 Corinthians 5:20). May your family’s voice be used not just to protect homeschooling, but to glorify God in every conversation and connection.
